Tom Jennings
freshman year, my dorm window looked out onto center city. i could see down broad st all the way to city hall, could spy the ben franklin in the distance, even 30th st station in the west, the beacon of philly for me when i was still a visitor. from my window philly was a new manageable geometry and i loved to skip class and climb on top of my mini fridge and stare down at the city for hours and stay up just to watch the nightly glint of one liberty place
sophomore year, my window looked out onto a pool i never could get myself to swim in. also my boyfriend’s ex’s apartment window. i lost myself that year and that view didn’t help. i became obsessed with peering through the blinds for a hint of how to better present myself to a guy i wanted to fall in love with. then he would join me on the weekends and id forget about my dirty habit and it took a long while for me to learn to live on one side of the blinds
and now, my window overlooks a vacant overgrown lot flanked by a faded gate covered in asymmetrical stars that reads ‘welcome’ which always makes me laugh
my apartment is lower to the ground now and through the stubby north philly blocks i can halfway see the city clock, certainly not the time, can halfway see 30 st station, my original terminal. but i see perfectly a glowing font reading ‘jefferson’ a mile off, which is the name of my dream med school. and i think its fun that, though i had the same city-facing view every year, i picked something different to focus on, to define my year by
and i like that, like that i can go from living on the broadest st in my world to living inwardly taxed to living inwardly empowered and have gained a love and have kept a friend and have determined an endpoint
and its so fun for me to trace my steps here
